Motor oil in the modern car

The modern motorcar is totally unrecognizable from its forbears. Since the first cars were built the industry has been on a rapid technological curve bringing us to the safe and efficient vehicles we have today. Not only do they look very different (apart from the four wheels) they also have unbelievable levels of reliability and efficiency. Technological innovation and mass production techniques all over the world have made cars like this affordable for most people.

Modern reliability levels mean that many drivers do not know how to do even simple car maintenance. This is not a bad thing, we don’t have to know how a TV works to watch it on or how a computer works to use a word processor, but there is a lot enjoyment to be had from understanding your car and working on it. Not only that but a basic comprehension of the cars Systems is needed to make sure it runs efficiently and safely for as long as possible.

When you turn the ignition key the engine starts. Pistons are forced up and down and connect to the crankshaft via rods. The shape of the cam in the crankshaft is then used to turn this up and down a motion into round and round motion that can be used to drive the car. Motor oil is used to lubricate these moving parts to make them more efficient. It also prevents damage. Because motor oil works in the very heart of the engine it is well placed to provide extra cooling. High performance cars often have a dedicated oil cooling unit as well.

Motor oil contains additives to help clean the engine and prevent corrosion and rusting. Cheap oil often lacks these additives and is why you should avoid cheap oil changes at all costs. You can also learn more about engine oil at the oil pressure gauge guide blog.
