Cut Commuting Costs by Riding a 50cc Moped

Gasoline prices may have come down a bit from where they were a year or so ago, but over the longer term they can only keep going up. Oil is getting harder to find and more expensive to drill in deep waters where the remaining reserves are located and gasoline consumption in places such as China and India is just shooting up. Whichever way you look at it, filling your gas tank is just going to keep getting more expensive year by year.
There is, however, a great way to cut the costs of getting to work and around town and that is using a 50cc moped to commute to work. These are itty bitty little bikes and in truth no red-blooded biker would be seen dead on one. But for the average guy or girl who isn’t trying to show off but is just trying to get around town cheaply it is hard to beat a scooter for price.
The first thing about scooters and mopeds is that they are really cheap to buy in comparison with cars. A new one will only set you back a couple of thousand and a used one shouldn’t cost more than a thousand at all. The great thing about them is that they are also really simple mechanically so if you buy a used one you don’t have to worry too much about major mechanical issues as you might with a used car. Repairs and services are usually pretty cheap too.
The even better thing is that they are cheap to run. The average scooter will run on the sniff of a fuel pump. I fill mine once a week and guess what it takes. I only put in about 4 litres of petrol (gasoline) once a week to use it every day to get to work. It really is hard to beat that. The other great thing about a moped is that you don’t need to worry too much about taking tests. In Britain and large parts of Europe all you need to do is a CBT course, which takes a day, and after that you are free to go off on your bike. Enjoy and here’s to happy and cheap commuting.
